Tokyo Running

Tokyo Running

Like any big city, Tokyo has its ups and downs when it comes to running. It’s hard to run in any city unless it’s very early in the morning and of course it’s mostly pavement. For our 2023 trip, we stayed in the Asakusa section of Tokyo. So there were two places I ran:

First, Asakusa itself. As a pretty touristy area, it’s a ghost town before 8 AM. Also, many streets are pedestrian-only. But Asakusa is a relatively compact area, so if you want to run more than 4 or 5 miles you need to take a labyrinthine approach. Asakusa is about 1 km on a side, so I went up and back various back roads to build up the miles.

Second, Ueno Park. From Asakusa, it’s about 1.5 kilometers of city street running to reach the park, but once you are in the park, there are many dirt trails that weave throughout the park and it’s easy to get in 4-6 miles with no repeating scenery.
